Known as alkaline hydrolysis, this process utilises a warm, gentle water-based alkaline solution to break down the body. This process bypasses need of a coffin or shroud and families receive the remains which are similar to ashes as with cremation. The environmentally friendly service may be preferred by some who dislike the impact of more traditional disposal methods. The residual liquid is treated and disposed of and the skeletal remains crushed to appear like cremated remains are returned to the family. Nb: A newly created company in Tasmania is offering this form of disposal, see Alluvium Water Cremations
